Pottery Workshop – Natural Textures

Learn to bring the textures and patterns of nature into your ceramics in this beginner-friendly workshop focused on clay surface design. In this creative session, we’ll use natural materials such as leaves, twigs, seeds, and other found objects to roll and press beautiful patterns into clay.

You’ll then transform your textured slabs into functional or decorative pieces such as vases, plates, mugs, coasters, or small vessels. Throughout the workshop you’ll design, build, and decorate your work, exploring how natural textures can add unique character to your ceramics.

You’ll then transform your textured slabs into functional or decorative pieces such as vases, plates, mugs, coasters, or small vessels. Throughout the workshop you’ll design, build, and decorate your work, exploring how natural textures can add unique character to your ceramics.

You will receive pre-rolled clay slabs and step-by-step guidance on shaping, joining, adding details, and refining your forms. No previous pottery experience is needed.

All materials are provided, including clay, tools, and natural texturing materials. Participants are also welcome to bring their own objects or natural materials they think could create interesting textures in clay.

What you’ll learn:

·       How to hand-build using slab techniques with step-by-step guidance.

·       How to create surface textures using natural materials and found objects.

·       Tips for shaping, joining, and refining your forms.

·       How to add handles, edges, and personal details.

·       Preparing your work for kiln firing.

Collection

Once dried your work will be professionally fired twice and glazed for a glossy finish, this process takes 2-3 weeks. We will arrange a date where you can collect your work from the front desk at the Community + Arts centre. If this isn’t suitable we may be able to arrange an alternative. If you prefer, we can post your ceramic pieces, please be aware there is an additional charge for this.

·       Ages: Under 16’s should be accompanied by an adult

·       Skill Level: Suitable for beginners – no prior experience required

·       What’s Included: All clay, slips, tools, firing and glazing, your one-of-a-kind designs to keep.

·       What to Wear: Old clothes or an apron – clay can get messy!

·       🔥 Firing & Collection: Your decorated piece will be fired and ready for collection in 2–3 weeks (collection from the community centre)

·       Spaces: Maximum group of 18

Hiya, my name is Jaime and I am a local potter based in Nairn. I moved here last year and after setting my little home studio up I am so excited to now offer workshops, meet other creative people and hopefully have a laugh! I studied ceramics at university and will happily share my knowledge, tips and tricks and chat all things pottery to anyone who’ll listen.

  • Cancel at least 48 hours before: You’ll get a full refund or can move your booking to another date.

  • Less than 48 hours / no-show: Since we’ve already prepared the materials, we are unable to offer a refund or reschedule.

  • If we need to cancel: You’ll get a full refund or can choose a new date, whatever works best for you!

Disclaimer: Just a heads up: Clay can occasionally crack while drying or firing, it's unlikely and the kiln gods are generally on our side, but it does happen on occasion. However, we'll do our very best to prevent it!
